Trying new foods and writing a survey - 21st September
Published on September 22, 2023 by Fiona Evans

Taking stock of the project's progress and trying new foods together

After a break of five weeks our Marine Edibles group was back together to talk about what happens next.

Fiona delivered 10 chairs (in the sale at Go Outdoors) for the group to use for fishing.  Really essential bit of kit.

Also a chance to try some new foods bought fresh this morning from the Shellfish Deli in the pannier market. Julie tried cockles and whelks for the first time.  Leanne tried cockles.  The group also sampled smoked mackerel, salmon and crab patty on very crusty sourdough baguettes from Jacka Bakery.  The mussels were a step too far though.  John introduced vinegar to the cockles and this made them more acceptable.  Micheal remembers eating them when out on the lash in Liverpool back in the day.

We also made a start on writing a survey/feedback questionnaire for participants taking part the Marine Edibles project now and in the future.  This will help us assess what can and has been achieved by this work.

Because there is money in the coffers the group decided that a trip to fish in clean water - somewhere like Start Point - would be really good fun.  Maybe a barbecue too depending on what we catch.
