Mātou Collective

Mātou Collective is a community of open collaboration between diverse, passionate people engaged in systemic transformation. Our mission is to develop digital infrastructure projects that promote epistemic justice and increase well-being.

We want great digital infrastructure, institutions, services, products, and tools that enable the coordination of the social, economic, and political systems that benefit us all. To achieve this, we work together on practical ways to help serve and support all people and communities. We use information technology to move governance to local contexts, achieve outcomes, and hold each other accountable. 

Mātou Collective is a kaupapa Māori organisation. We are grounded in Te Ao Māori. Our work is influenced by, and we acknowledge, inspiring efforts in Taiwan, where local leaders came together with technologists, designers, storytellers, public servants, activists, companies and social organisations to collaborate to tackle the wicked problems facing their society and build public digital infrastructure.

Our purpose is to empower Maori and Indigenous communities by co-creating value-aligned tools and infrastructure. We aim to facilitate self-determination, resilience, and data ownership while enabling communities to be effective stewards of the earth, environment, and society for future generations.
