Birthday Celebration Fundraiser! (2022)

To celebrate Lin's birthday and a year of the Money Health Collective, we are organizing a fundraiser! Over the past year, the MHC has served 250+ people from 20+ countries, increasing participants' level of comfort and confidence around money. Services provided by the Money Health Collective are volunteer-run, and all donations go directly towards the cost of running the Collective to ensure that anyone is able to access the programs at no cost. Thanks so much for all your support!

Dear all,

It's been a wonderful year for the Money Health Collective. We've had the opportunity to serve over 250 people, from 20+ countries -- by creating a safe, supportive, empowering space that anyone is able to access, focused on tackling a topic (money) that can be so challenging for all of us to navigate.

As I wrote last year on my birthday, I’m challenging myself to again do something that I always struggle to do -- to ask for and accept support 😊 Since the Money Health Collective is entirely volunteer-run, all money raised will go towards operational expenses for facilitating sessions and directly supporting the collective’s participants.  One thing I love about our fiscal sponsor (Open Collective) is that its platform provides all donors with complete transparency in how the funds are being spent. Also, since our fiscal sponsor is a registered 501c3, all of your donations are tax-deductible.

I'm really honored to facilitate this space that brings together incredible people from all backgrounds to talk about our experiences with money. Among the many conversations we've organized for people around the world, we've also designed and facilitated conversations for the Fulbright Association, for the Open Collective Foundation (as part of their wonderful Solidarity School!), for Shapers across the Global Shapers Community, for the New York Worker Cooperative Business Development Initiative, and of course for the Mira Fellowship family that helped start it all.

With the data collected through survey responses, we've shown that after just one hour of money conversations with the MHC, participants self-report an improvement of 25-30% in their level of confidence about money as well as their comfort level in talking openly about money.  Over the past year, the work of the MHC has been featured in news articles, as well as thoughtful articles by participants and advocates, including dear Mike and Caroline from the Open Collective, and outreach messages from the amazing Shri, who is MHC's first ever volunteer, brilliant strategic partner, and incredible conversation facilitator.

All of this has been done in a bootstrapped way on a very small budget. I'm incredibly thankful for the friends and family who have donated their time and resources to support the MHC so far.

I'm always so inspired by the thoughtful reflections of our participants. Sharing some of their brilliance with you here:

"Many of us are similar in our desires, wishes and anxieties in terms of financial well-being... We do not need to feel alone."

"I commit to being more open about sharing my financial insecurities and providing a space for others to share their financial anxieties."

"Talking about money feels better, not worse... A relationship with money, like anything else, is a process and a journey."

"My experiences are valid, and the spaces I failed and then righted myself could be helpful to someone else, and that I’m not the only ‘successful’ person that still has deep rooted feelings of shame or guilt around money."

"A lot of us are in the same boat....and I don't have to make a big decision. I can make many smaller intentional decisions that build.

And there's more to come. Over the next year, one of our main focus areas is building out Money Journeys and Retreats, focusing on long-term behavioral adaptations designed to help participants not only develop money habits but also a sense of inner wellbeing and groundedness through community support. We've run 2 pilot versions of this so far.  One participant shared, "At the end of the money journey, though the situation outside of me remains difficult as before, I now feel calm and confident and able to handle it all."

So, what exactly is the Money Health Collective?
  • A safe and supportive space to explore our stories around money, through facilitated, peer-supported conversations
  • Virtual and open to anyone regardless of background, with no cost to access
  • Designed with intention to directly help participants with the situations they’re facing, alongside a supportive community, with guided resources and tools

By connecting with and understanding people from completely different backgrounds, on a topic (money) that can be so difficult for all of us, my hope is that we can be more united as a global community, to truly support and empower one another.

If you have questions, or if you’d like to participate or support in other ways (joining a Money Conversation session, volunteering, collaborating, anything at all), please don’t hesitate to reach out anytime! [email protected]

Wishing you and your loved ones a wonderful holiday season!

With love & gratitude,
Lin
