July 2022 wrap-up
Published on August 3, 2022 by Alaya Carr

Dear all,

We hope you’re staying cool out there! Here on the unceded lands of the Duwamish people, we’ve been struggling through a heat wave. That being said, we’ve been doing our best to practice collective care and get books out into our communities. Your continued solidarity and donations make this possible. Thank you!

In July, we collaborated with COVID19 Mutual Aid/South King County Mutual Aid (Instagram: covid19mutualaid) for their monthly food pantry. Due to the heat wave, the books will be distributed this month! We also gave out a couple hundred books to kiddos at the Black Perinatal Health Campaign Community Cookout with SURGE (Instagram: surge4rj). Some favorite titles were:
  • See You Soon (by Mariame Kaba & Bianca Diaz)
  • We Are Water Protectors (by Carole Lindstrom & Michaela Goade)
  • Thank You, Omu! (by Oge Mora)
  • Baby Goes to Market (by Atinuke & Angela Brooksbank)
  • The King Of Kindergarten (by Derrick Barnes & Vanessa Brantley-Newton)
  • On the Trapline (by David Robertson & Julie Flett)
  • Star Child: A Biographical Constellation of Octavia Estelle Butler (by Ibi Zoboi)
In July, we also held a new member orientation and got to discuss with new faces the creativity and imagination necessary for abolitionist organizing and practices. Many of our group are continuing to engage with the transformative justice materials from the Spring Up course, and MAB is excited to distribute their zines.

On further reflection, we have decided that we will need a 3-week heads up if you are interested in working with us. If your request is time sensitive, please send us your requests at least 3 weeks in advance. Due to supply chain issues, we need a bit more time for books to arrive. At the very least, this gives us the wiggle room to come up with alternative options of books to order. Ideally, please reach out to us with any (time-restricted) requests a month in advance. If there are any books that you would love to see at our pop-ups this summer, or if you are hoping to work with us for an event or to support your book-club/study group, please feel free to send us your suggestions via email at seamutualaidbooks (at) gmail.com

As always, stay tuned to our social media for any updates or pop-ups at @mutualaidbooks on Instagram.

With care + solidarity,
Alex (and the rest of the folks with Mutual Aid Books)
