Decolonizing Data
Published on October 19, 2024 by Desiree Acosta

Michuksus, again! It's that time of year!

Those who attended last year's #NITConf2023 discussion on decolonizing data provided feedback that participating in this vibrant and vital discussion was rewarding. So, of course, we have worked to bring the discussion forward again to offer the group. Natives In Tech is hosting a series of film screenings and a discussion on Decolonizing Data; This time made possible not just with your direct contributions, but also with the Urban Indian Health Institute, which has developed a robust framework worth circling up and discussing. Please join us for the first of two, Wed, Oct 23, 4:00 PM (PDT) in our collective coworking space on gather.town.  Our events are always free and open to everyone.

Accurate data tells accurate stories. For too long, western data practices have misidentified, misclassified, and erased Native people – resulting in data genocide. That’s why we’re partnering with the Urban Indian Health Institute to decolonize data.

Decolonizing data looks like presenting our data with the necessary context to tell complete stories. We know that data is not just numbers and statistics. Native data represents Native people.
With these harmful practices impacting everything from adequate healthcare funding to ending the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women crisis, we are one of many organizations committed to decolonizing data.

Accurate data is integral to addressing long-running health disparities, and we have the experience and expertise to lead these efforts.

We are decolonizing data by reclaiming Native data collection, analysis, and research. We are disrupting harmful western systems and rejecting deficit-based narratives. We are collecting data for Native people, by Native people. We are recognizing and honoring the inherent strength of Indigenous people.

The second film screening and hosted discussion will be part of #NITConf2024 so please mark your calendars as well for November 8! https://bit.ly/NITConf2024

Below you will see some screenshots from last year's activity. We look forward to being part of this important work together.
