Yesterday afternoon National Shattering Silence Coalition spoke out loud and clear at the Interdepartmental Serious Mental Illness Coordinating Committee (ISMICC). Of the 14 people who called in, 8 are NSSC members. I was so honored to stand with Sonja Burns, Ann Corcoran, Doug Dunbar, Cheri VanSant ,Leslie Carpenter ,Linda Mimms, Mary Ellen Stuart, Marilyn Hartman, Linda and Jeff Mikolajek, Janet Hays, Jonathan Delman, and Julia Ehret. Family members spoke their gut-wrenching truth so eloquently. Linda Mimms drove home the fact that these illnesses are neurological brain disorders and, as such, they should be demanding they be treated as such under parity law. Janet Hays reminded them what their focus is supposed to be - those with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and major depressive disorder. Leslie and I drove home all of the solutions to this decades long humanitarian crisis.
