OPEN-HEARTED SESSION IN KAKUMA ORGANIZED ON 14TH JUNE 2025
Published on June 15, 2025 by Ezekiel Khamis

A Blossoming of Empathy and Connection
Yesterday, the spirit of compassion and connection came alive in Kakuma during our Open-Hearted Session a reflective gathering designed for the pioneering participants of the first Nonviolent Communication (NVC) Training. Organized and hosted by Ezekiel Khamis, the lead facilitator and NVC advocate in Kakuma, the event created a nurturing space for growth, gratitude, and transformation.
From the very beginning, the atmosphere was charged with warmth and mutual respect. Each of the 25 participants from the initial training was invited to bring one guest, and the turnout was a beautiful sight 52 people gathered, hearts open, stories ready to be shared. It was more than a session; it was a living testament to the human need for authentic connection and peaceful dialogue.
During the event, attendees reflected deeply on their journeys since completing the NVC training. Many spoke about the personal changes they’ve experienced greater self-awareness, improved communication with family and peers, and a renewed sense of purpose. Others shared how they’ve begun to influence their communities, modeling empathy and helping resolve conflicts peacefully.
The session also allowed for new connections to form. Guests most of whom were hearing about NVC for the first time expressed enthusiasm and a desire to join future training programs. This surge in interest is a strong indicator that the NVC movement in Kakuma is growing organically and is genuinely rooted in the lived experiences and aspirations of local youth.
The success of this session marks a critical milestone. Not only did it affirm the impact of our first training, but it also showcased a rapidly expanding network of young people committed to peacebuilding and emotional literacy. The positive feedback and heartfelt testimonies left no doubt: youth in Kakuma are more than ready and eager to learn, live, and lead through Nonviolent Communication.
As organizers and facilitators, we see this as just the beginning. With continued support, we aim to deepen this work, expand our reach, and nurture a culture of peace in one of the world’s most complex humanitarian settings.
To our partners, potential donors, and supporters this is the kind of change your support makes possible.
Together, we are planting seeds of peace. Together, we are building a future rooted in empathy.
