Removing identifying information from Incognito contributions
Published on October 25, 2021 by Benjamin Nickolls
Incognito contributions will no longer share information with collective admins. We will roll out this change on Monday 15th November. If you are impacted by this change please comment on this post or contact [email protected] and we will be in touch.
In September 2019 we introduced anonymous, 'incognito' contributions on Open Collective. Incognito contributions allow users to support Collectives without doing so publicly. We continued to share the names and email addresses of incognito contributors with the administrators of the Collectives they support so that administrators could make informed decisions about whose support they wished to accept.
But we do not believe this provides adequate protection for contributors under our commitments to GDPR. As a result we are going to remove this information from the contributor exports available to administrators of Collectives. We will be updating the notice you see when contributing to a Collective and we will be updating our Privacy Policy to reflect this change in the coming weeks.
Walking 'the fine line between transparency and privacy' continues to be a challenge. This change may also impact some Collectives: those who use contributor data to manage benefits in return for support.
As a result, we are reaching out for feedback before rolling out this change on Monday 15th November. If you are impacted by this change please comment on this post or contact [email protected] and we will be in touch.

Is there a way to disable the incognito contribution option on a per Collective basis?

Benedict — not at the moment, but we're in conversation with 1-2 Collectives that may be impacted by this (inc. meet-coop)

There are many donors who do not want their names shared publicly, but are happy to privately provide their contact info to the organizations they support. Can we give this option to people when they make a donation? It's very helpful to have the email addresses of our supporters so that we can invite them to events, say thank you, share private updates, etc. I worry about our financial sustainability without being able to reach out personally.
