Published on December 22, 2022 by Sayeed Choudhury

What did you accomplish during 2022? How did you use the money?
Since receiving funding in July 2022, we have:
  • Increased the size of the community through outreach to over 150 individuals on our mailing list and on our Slack channel.
  • Built the Community Management Team and put in place the community infrastructure to manage our mailing lists, events and community details appropriately.
  • Built a new website, to allow for better comms with the community and sharing existing resources from the community.
  • Held community calls on the topics of Semesters of Code, Open Source Security, Setting up University OSPOs, OSS Education and Skills.
  • Held an in-person workshop in Trinity College Dublin on OSPOs in Academic Institutions.
  • Participated in third party events such as the US OSS Policy Assembly - Open Source and Open Science.
  • Published four case studies, and developed a pipeline for 4 more in 2023.
  • Published the first drafts of the University OSPO Guide.

What challenges did you face during 2022? What did your Collective learn? How did you change or grow?

In our first 6 months as a Collective, our focus has been putting in place basic infrastructure and project management resources to support the community and continue outreach and activities.

What are your plans for 2023?
In 2023, we plan to further grow our OSPO++ in Academia community. We already have a schedule of events planned, including:
  • Monthly community calls
  • Working Group meetings to follow up on community priorities including open source management, open source education and skills, technology transfer.
  • Outreach events at member universities.
  • In-person/hybrid conferences in March and July for deeper dives into the priority topics.

We also have a pipeline of additional case studies in the works, as well as plans to publish other resources for the community, including the final version of the University OSPO Guide.
