About
The Places is an open-source personal GIS system designed for structured, long-term management of geographic data.
Unlike typical map-based note apps, it is built around a normalized data model with atomic Points as the foundation for higher-level entities such as Places and Routes.
Core Features & Architecture
- Atomic Data Model: Points are reusable and referenced across entities, enabling consistent spatial relationships and data integrity.
- Deterministic sync engine: The system uses a structured batch update model (added/updated/deleted flags) to ensure reliable synchronization between client and backend.
- Self-hosted, privacy-first: Users retain full control over their geographic data via a standalone backend (PHP+MariaDB/MySQL).
Roadmap
The project is evolving towards PostgreSQL with PostGIS to support advanced spatial queries and scaling.
