Our Nuevos Vecinos are going into shelters
Published on December 14, 2023 by Elvia Rodriguez Ochoa

By now you have heard the large tent city on California Avenue is not going forward.
Instead the city has expended some of the current shelters and many faith organizations are taking migrants in as well. Families are also being helped to find apartments which also opens up shelter spaces for new arrivals.
What is now happening is that the stations have been almost completely emptied out. As of today, there is only one station that is still considered "open for migrants". This is fantastic news for the PSRT and what we have been working towards for months!
Yet, the work is not over as we continue to receive buses everyday. Many of us that have volunteered at stations continue to work with the people we have met to ensure our Nuevos Vecinos receive the support they need to find a place in our great city. Another aspect of this work is reaching out to any volunteers that were working directly at the stations and ensuring that we have received all requests for reimbursements.
With this in mind, we want to first and foremost thank each and every one that has contributed to this fund! It has all made a huge difference by providing meals, medicine, and clothing at the end of what has been a long journey for these families. We thank you so very, very much.
We would also like to ask for you to consider an additional end of year donation or to share this fundraiser with your family and friends so that we reimburse as many volunteers as possible including those that are now providing support at shelters throughout the city.
Chicago is changing the narrative of how our immigration system can function. We continue to provide examples of collective care. Thank you so much for joining us in living up to what it means to be a welcoming city.
