FAQ

Who manages the platform and how is the pricing set?

Since October 2024, the platform has been stewarded by OFi Consortium (OFiCo), a membership non-profit organization. Pricing is set by OFiCo's members, who are also its main users, and is aimed at ensuring the platform's long-term sustainability. It is structured to scale with your needs, whether you're serving a single organization or an entire network of collectives.

What changed in the new pricing?

The previous pricing model included a 15% Revenue Share on Host Fees collected on non-crowdfunding contributions to the platform. The updated pricing replaces that with a non-percentage model based on measurable activity, such as the number of Collectives and the Expenses you process.

This approach makes costs clearer and more predictable. Instead of paying a share of your revenue, your price now scales with how you use the platform. Organizations select a plan that fits their activity level and needs while Collectives remain free to use, supported by optional Platform Tips.

What are Platform Tips?

Platform Tips are optional contributions that financial contributors can add when they make a financial contribution on the platform. These tips support the Open Collective Platform, and they help ensure that we can keep the core service available at no cost to Collectives. Tips do not reduce the amount your Organization or the Collectives you host receive, because they are added on top of the intended support.

If you prefer a more traditional pricing model, you can opt for a simple 5% Crowdfunding Fee instead of tips. This removes tips from the contribution flow and applies a fixed fee to incoming funds. If that sounds better for you, please contact us and we will switch you over.

What is the difference between an Organization and a Collective?

An Organization is a legal entity, such as a company, nonprofit, or cooperative, that uses the platform to manage its own funds or to act as a Host for other groups. Hosts receive and hold contributions on behalf of the Collectives they support and ensure that funds are used in line with their purpose and policies.

A Collective is a group of people with a shared purpose who raise and spend money together through a Host. Collectives do not directly hold funds, as their Host, which is an Organization, manages the money for them.

In short, Organizations have legal and financial control, while Collectives focus on their mission and community activities.
