Queertopia came about organically during the BLM protests of 2020 when we were still combined with Little Petal Alliance. The protests were mainly held at APD, across from one of the largest predominantly Black unhoused camps in Austin. Protesters, who were predominantly white, completely ignored the campers who were sharing their space so we began doing mutual aid work there as a thank you. The first people to reside at the shelter were Black unhoused protestors who lived at that camp followed by trans youth who were kicked out of their homes.
