Versions 2.3 and 2.3.1 released 🎉
Published on March 31, 2020 by billz

Like many of you, dear backers, code contributors to RaspAP are in voluntary self-isolation or mandatory lockdown. While we share this burden, we equally find ourselves with the luxury of surplus time. What better use of this time than to invest our creative energies into open source? Our hope is that RaspAP, in a small way, might help facilitate remote work, make it easier for people to communicate or simply get by day-to-day. We've heard from users in Italy, China and elsewhere who are using RaspAP to share WiFi at home. As a financial backer, your support directly impacts our work to assist users around the world. Now, on to the release news...

Included in version 2.3 is Bridged AP mode. This is one of the top requested features for the project, so we're exceedingly glad to roll it out. Details on using this feature are available here. Another major enhancement is advanced DHCP options, which enables upstream DNS server configuration. This tells RaspAP to forward DNS queries to servers you define exclusively. You will also find a dropdown with a list of privacy-forward hosted DNS servers, such as Quad9 (user configurable via an external dns-servers.json file).

More info on the above features plus bug fixes is available on the project releases page.

Parallel with this release is version 2.3.1! Hot on the heels of v2.3, this release extends beta support to more Debian-based distros. Included are the current (Buster) releases of Armbian, Debian and Raspbian as well as Ubuntu Server 18.04 LTS and 19.10. To achieve this, the installer was completely refactored to align it with Debian's modern SysV style. An ancillary benefit of this is that RaspAP no longer touches global configuration files like /etc/rc.local and /etc/sudoers.

This required extensive testing with all of the above distros on multiple hardware devices. We opted to purchase an Orange Pi to test Armbian, and this cost was 100% covered by our backers. Thank you! We're hopeful this release will encourage developers on many more ARM/Debian-based single-board computers to use and contribute to the project.

Upgrading your existing RaspAP install to this latest release is very straightforward. See this FAQ for details. Alternatively, you can use the Quick Installer at your device's shell prompt to (re)install a fresh version.

Again, our sincere gratitude for being a backer of this project.
