About
Red Hook’s community groups have kicked into high gear to support our new neighbors. As with any members of our community, we are connecting anyone staying at the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal with the resources and support they deserve. Please see below how to support this project both in person (direct aid) and with donations (fiscal aid, scroll down for expense policy).
If you would like to support this project in person:
If you would like to support this project in person:
- Volunteer in our community space! We are connecting with new friends, breaking bread, learning English, and redistributing resources daily and all are welcomed! Sign up for a shift here.
- Donate new and gently supplies at multiple drop-off locations in Red Hook.
- Follow Red Hook Mutual Aid on Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter to learn about distribution and volunteer opportunities.
- Join the Red Hook Mutual Aid network on one of our project teams!
- Join Red Hook Mutual Aid's Buddy System for Asylum Seekers. You will be paired with someone as an advocate and conversation partner. This is the most powerful way to participate in mutual aid: building relationships, social capital, and self-sufficiency for new members of our community.
RHMA Money Management Policy
Basic Principles:
- Mutual aid is about solidarity, not charity. The most powerful solidarity comes from our day to day work.
- Our guiding principle for managing and dispersing donations is accountability to the community. We commit to total transparency in this process.
- Our goal is to disperse any money we collect as quickly as possible, guided by the stated needs of our community, while also making sure to maintain equity and to assess and respond to the most urgent needs.
- We appreciate all donations, which become part of our general fund via Open Collective. Please note that under the fiscal sponsorship of Open Collective, granting us 501c3 status, this is not a donor-advised fund; in other words, donors do not determine how their donations will be spent, since we work based on the immediate needs of the community. All expenditures can be tracked via our Open Collective page. Despite the fact that there are “project pages” on Open Collective, none of our funds are earmarked for specific spending. We use our funds in accordance with the needs of the community.
- Free options are prioritized. Our principle is that money should only be spent after free options and existing benefits are considered. We will only spend money in instances when free options are not possible.
Disbursement Process:
All receipts and invoices will be submitted through Open Collective and if expenses fall under the following categories they will be approved:
- Expenses related to the community space, i.e. microwave, trash bags, cleaning supplies.
- Expenses related to the ESL program in community spaces who are partnering with us, i.e. snacks or school supplies.
- Expenses submitted by volunteers who are part of the buddy system in direct advocacy for their buddy. Any expense submitted by a RHMA volunteer who is part of our buddy system for BCT residents OR our preexisting buddy system will be approved.
