About
VISION
A Non-violent world that can organically nourish the people and care for them.
MISSION
To advocate for and sustain non-violent communication among community members in realizing a violent free society for prosperity.
Rusinga Island is a small Island in Lake Victoria the largest fresh lake in the world. The Island is in Kenya waters bordering Uganda on the Western part of Kenya. The community in Rusinga is facing food insecurity, poverty, and environmental degradation due to engagement in uncontrolled fishing practices. RIOFA is aiming at reversing the dynamics of the disconnect between the Rusinga community into a relationship that nurtures life-affirmation through NVC. INPUT
RIOFA was formed in the year 2012 and registered with the Kenya Government as an organic farmers group. It has been a grassroots organization for over 11 years and rises and subsides with volunteers and few funding opportunities. RIOFA NVC project is trying to make a positive cultural change based on NEEDS feelings and norms of the community. Through intensive training and awareness creation, the community needs to move from water violence, food insecurity, poverty, and crisis to stability and self-resilience thereby building a resilient community.
ACTIVITIES
RIOFA conducts training on organic farming, sustainable agriculture, and natural resource management, incorporating NVC techniques for effective communication and conflict resolution among farmers. They emphasize the importance of empathy and listening in building strong community relationships.
OUTPUTS
Through NVC-informed activities, RIOFA helps farmers improve communication, resolve conflicts peacefully, and work together towards common goals. Farmers adopt organic farming practices, increase food production, and develop mutual support networks within the community.
OUTCOME
By NVC principles RIOFA creates a more inclusive and supportive farming community on Rusinga Island. Farmers experience improved relationships, enhanced cooperation, and increased resilience in the face of challenges leading to greater social cohesion and collective responsibility.
IMPACT
The theory of change of RIOFA and its link with NVC RESULTS IN A MORE PEACEFUL, SUSTAINABLE, and Resilient Community in Rusinga Island. The connection resonates well with youths for this radical change in our social systems which will never equal any at any given historical time.
