About
Sauna for All is a grassroots movement founded on the Global Public Sauna-Bathing Charter, a shared framework of principles for the responsible development of public sauna around the world.
The movement is a home for the Charter, for emerging research, case studies and best practices, bringing together practitioners, researchers, organisations and communities to learn from one another and advance the field. Together we develop and champion the research, resources and practical tools that help communities and organisations build public sauna with confidence, strengthening public trust and regenerative, long-term public value.
Why now
The evidence keeps growing. There are real benefits to regular sauna bathing, and more of them when it is shared with others. Sauna is having its moment, with more people bathing together than in generations.
That is exactly why the shape this takes matters. Scale without shared principles has a cost, and the values that started it are usually the first thing to go. Sauna's founding values, and the health and wellbeing outcomes they produce, are worth keeping: equality, presence, and care for each other and the places we bathe.
Right now there is nothing guiding what public and community sauna-bathing means, so there is nothing for municipalities or investors to recognise, and nothing stopping anyone from calling anything a sauna as it grows.

At the same time there are already good people building this well. Operators, hosts, researchers and stewards are doing the hard work of community sauna, often alone, without anyone to learn from or lean on.
We are organising now, while the movement is still young enough to choose its own shape.
What we do
This is the start. Every fast-growing movement faces the same choice: build on solid ground, or collapse under its own weight. We're choosing solid ground.

- A charter. Shared principles that define what community sauna actually means, shaped by the people doing the work rather than by any one group's rules.
- Effective collaboration. Connecting operators, hosts, trainers, researchers and stewards around the world so that no one has to build alone. That means sharing best practice on access and safer spaces, and helping the public and decision-makers understand what to look for and what to ask when they are evaluating a sauna space.
- A shared voice. Strong enough for funders, cities and policymakers to hear, and to recognise community sauna as something worth investing in and planning for in the right way.
What we believe
- Sauna access matters. Access means proximity, affordability, accessibility and belonging, so that public sauna is close enough to reach, affordable enough to use, accessible to every body, and welcoming to all.
- Sauna is a living culture. It is sustained by people rather than products. The traditions, values and practices we inherit deserve to be honoured, shared with care, and stewarded for future generations.
- Public good comes before private gain. Profit can support the mission. It should not replace it.
- Stewardship requires competence. Facilitating the wellbeing of others is a responsibility. Public sauna should be stewarded by people with the knowledge, experience and humility needed to create safe, welcoming and culturally respectful spaces.
- Place matters. Sauna should strengthen the community it is rooted in rather than extract from it.
- Care is not optional. Every public sauna carries a duty of care to the people who gather there, the cultures it draws from, and the places that sustain it. That means spaces which are safe, well run, and built to last.
- Wellbeing circulates. Public sauna strengthens the relationships, trust and resilience that let communities adapt, recover and flourish.
- This work deserves support. Community sauna is real social infrastructure and should be funded and recognised as such.
What your contribution supports
We have kept this a movement instead of an institution, on purpose. Open Collective lets us hold and spend money openly without building a structure that would outgrow the work. There are no staff and no offices, at this time. The work is carried by people who are also running their own saunas, which means what comes in goes straight into the things goodwill alone cannot cover.
Contributions go toward:
- running saunaforall.org and looking after the signatory process
- translating the Charter into the languages of the communities using it
- commissioning artwork and design so the Charter can be recognised on a wall, a door, or a website
- producing shared resources, including a handbook, case studies, cultural guidance from knowledge holders, and practical guidance on access, safer spaces, safety and permitting
- funding and sharing research on access, health and community outcomes, so operators are not making the case from anecdote alone
- putting funds towards online and in-person gatherings where practitioners can meet, compare notes and work on the Charter together

We are at the beginning. As the movement grows, so will our sense of what it can become, and we will plan the next stage of the work in the open.
