"HOW MUCH MORE" Scientist Rebellion campaign & climate actions

We are a large and diverse group of scientists and academics from every continent. First, we were concerned. Then, we were alarmed. Now, we are terrified. World leaders have known about the dangers of the climate crisis for decades, but they are not acting accordingly. It is still possible to turn the tide – but we need your support.

COP28 is set out to be another catastrophic climate failure by our leaders. Scientist Rebellion is launching a new campaign, bringing scietnists and academics out of the labs and into the streets all over the world. Help Scientist Rebellion fund their climate actions, anti-COP conferences, citizens’ assemblies, & civil disobedience and bring the truth directly to the people.

Our goal is to raise 70,000 euros to cover the expenses for activities in 33 countries across 4 continents!

Here are just some of the climate actions and events we are planning that you can help fund. High-risk actions are not listed here for safety. Our climate actions are strictly non-violent.

Abya Yala (aka Latin/South America)

  • Solidify existing coalitions focused on resource preservation and anti-extractivism.

  • Demonstrate/protest against mining activities, extractivism, oil and gas.

  • Organize people’s assembly to educate colleagues and the public about COP failures and the climate crisis and what are the solutions.

  • Adaptation and resilience education.

  • March/rally to promote resource conservation and preservation.

Africa

  • Organize citizens’ COP.

  • Street marches and demonstrations.

  • Organize a teach-in and march to government offices carrying the message of COP failure and the need to act.

  • Organize  a teach-in to teach the public how to engage with government officials about the climate crisis and available solutions.

  • Organize NVDA/NVCD training sessions.

  • Organize training for activists in how to organize and put on events.

  • Organize a teach-in to educate the public about the effects of global heating.

Turtle Island (aka North America)

  • Wheat-pasting, stickering, projections on buildings

  • Potential some civil disobedience actions

Europe

  • High-Risk Non Violent Direct Action and Civil Disobedience

  • Organize people’s assemblies and teach-ins to educate colleagues and the public about COP failures and the climate crisis.

  • Re-configure public streets to illustrate what life might look like if we fail.

  • Organize pop-up “Ask a Scientist” education events to engage the public in dialogue.

SR is also present in Asia (India) and Oceania (Australia).

How Much More climate failure until we act?
How Much More wealth for the few and destruction for the many?
How Much More silencing the science to do the bidding of the fossil fuel industry?
How Much More until we create a world that we can all live in and thrive?
We say to leaders at COP28 “No More”
The solutions are available. Let’s make it happen!

No country is taking action in line with a 1.5°C pathway, the temperature limit aspired to in the Paris Agreement (2015). Rich countries, which have contributed most to the climate crisis, pretend they have decades left to decarbonize, while poor countries bear the brunt of impacts without adequate compensation or help. Those who demand justice and accountability are increasingly being persecuted.

Continuing on this path will mean untold suffering. Large parts of our planet will become uninhabitable, creating hundreds of millions of refugees, unprecedented famines, and untold suffering and death.

We do not have to surrender to this future.

The solutions are available. What prevents adequate action is vested interests and entrenched power – institutions, corporations, and wealthy individuals who benefit from the destructive status quo. The fact that COP28 is chaired by the CEO of an oil company is emblematic of the profound influence of this entrenched power.

Overcoming these vested interests requires a large-scale mobilisation of society. It has happened before: without strong social movements, there would be no civil rights, no women’s right to vote, no weekends, no holidays, nor much of the welfare that considerable parts of the world enjoy today.

As scientists and academics, we believe it is now necessary to step up and engage in collective climate action. Like thousands of people around the world, many of us have been advocating and protesting for a better world in a variety of ways, including peaceful civil disobedience. And we need your support.
