About

The Scottish Forum on Nuclear Legacy (SFNL) is a new, independent and community-led initiative to ensure that Scotland’s nuclear past, present and future is managed safely, transparently and inclusively.
Scotland has five civil nuclear sites and a defence presence, all facing long-term challenges in decommissioning, radioactive waste management and site transitions. Decisions made today will affect communities, the environment, and future generations for decades to come.
SFNL exists to:
  • Give communities a voice – hosting public forums, events and online discussions to make sure citizens and councils can shape decisions.
  • Scrutinise and influence policy – publishing independent reports and recommendations to government, regulators and industry.
  • Celebrate progress – recognising successes such as hazard reduction and socio-economic benefits.
  • Highlight risks – raising awareness of funding gaps, skills shortages, and transparency concerns.
  • Promote intergenerational fairness – engaging young people, academia, and small businesses in developing innovative solutions.
  • Connect internationally – sharing lessons and best practice from countries facing similar nuclear legacy challenges.

We are a not-for-profit Community Interest Company (CIC) (application pending) with an asset lock, governed independently and transparently. All donations and resources are used for the benefit of Scotland’s communities – never for private gain.

By supporting SFNL, you help ensure that decisions about Scotland’s nuclear legacy are taken openly, accountably, and with the people of Scotland at the heart of the process.
