An Ah-May-Zing May!
Published on June 10, 2022 by Victoria Jayne

Hello Fridge Friends!

Can you believe it's summer already? Technically summer starts on June 21st, but it feels like summer outside! In the month of May, we continued to feed our neighbors with your generous partnership. We received $2,431.00 in donations and spent $1,870.39, which included $484.92 spent on replacing a broken refrigerator and $1,385.47 on food.

Thanks to our financial surplus, we have opened up fridge shops to three days of the week! Volunteers shop for the fridges on Sunday, Monday and Wednesday in addition to food we receive from food bank, restaurant, and grocery store donations.  In May we did 97 total fridge fills across our five locations.

Our most exciting achievement in May was opening our FIFTH location at Mifflin Square Park at 516 Wolf St! We were asked by many neighbors in the past two years to open a location at Mifflin Square, and we're thrilled to have partnered with the Friends of Mifflin Square Park to make that come true. Due to the electrical limitations of the location, we only have a pantry at present, but as Mifflin Square Park is redeveloped, we will see what the future holds!

As you may have seen on our social media, our greatest need is volunteer drivers. We have food available to pick up for the fridges every day of the week now, thanks to an expanded partnership with Food Connect. If you're interested in being a volunteer driver, please reach out to us at [email protected] or via Open Collective.

We also recently launched a new collection of merchandise, designed by volunteer and local artist Krista Starr Adams. You can purchase it on our website!

The South Philadelphia Community Fridge is a movement of every one of us. Your support keeps the fridges stocked and our neighbors fed. Thank you for being our Fridge Friend.
