SpaceBase seeks support to host Act In Space NZ 2026 & send the winning team to the global finals in Bordeaux, France—part of a CNES/ESA-led challenge.

About
Overview
SpaceBase is seeking philanthropic support to host the Act In Space 2026 national hackathon in New Zealand and to send the winning local team to represent the country at the international finals in Bordeaux, France, in April 2026. This initiative is part of a global space innovation challenge organized by CNES (France’s Space Agency) and supported by ESA (European Space Agency), with over 30 countries participating.
Funding Needed
We are requesting between NZD $10,000–$15,000 to cover:
• Local event logistics for the 24-hour hackathon in Auckland (catering, outreach, swag) – approx. $5,000
• International airfare and expenses for the winning team (3–4 individuals) to France – approx. $10,000
Confirmed In-Kind Support
We are pleased to share that we have already secured in-kind sponsorship for venue use and partial catering expenses for the hackathon event in Auckland. This support significantly reduces our overall financial needs. The remaining funding requested is the critical missing piece to ensure the winning New Zealand team can successfully compete internationally and that the national event is inclusive and well-resourced.
Why It Matters
• Empowering Youth & Innovation: The hackathon fosters innovation and real-world problem-solving using space technologies, inspiring students and young professionals to pursue careers in science, tech, and entrepreneurship.
• Global Exposure: Winning teams compete on a world stage, showcasing New Zealand’s talent in aerospace and innovation sectors.
• Equity & Opportunity: Many promising participants lack financial means to travel or participate fully—this funding ensures no one is left behind.
Impact for New Zealand
Supporting this initiative helps build the next generation of Kiwi space innovators and boosts New Zealand’s visibility on the global space map. It also aligns with national goals to strengthen STEM education, diversify the tech sector, and develop high-value industries.
