About

In the midst of one of the world’s deadliest crises, anarchist comrades are bravely fighting - both for survival and for revolution. The Anarchist Group in Sudan first emerged at the cusp of the revolutionary upheavals that began in 2018, and since then has matured through intense periods of mass protest, revolution, counter-revolution, civil war, and repression. We have been working closely with our comrades in Sudan for several years as part of our shared international struggle for the liberation of the Black working class from racist capitalist and colonialist exploitation. We have supported them to escape from dangerous situations into exile, to import and operate an industrial printing press, to get needed surgery and medical care, to open organizing spaces, to provide aid to internally displaced people, and much more. We are calling on all supporters of freedom to join us in materially supporting the critical on-the-ground work being done by the Anarchist Group in Sudan. Join us in this international solidarity campaign by making a one time or repeating contribution to support the growth of peace and freedom in Sudan.

ABOUT THE SITUATION IN SUDAN
In a world filled with horrific crises driven by capitalism, imperialism, and nationalism, the current situation in Sudan has been called "the worst health and humanitarian crisis in the world" by the World Health Organization.

Sudan experienced s revolution of historic significance in 2019, when the Sudanese people forced out the dictator Omar El-Bashir through the power of working class organization in their unions and their neighborhood Resistance Committees. However, this victory was followed by the tragic counter-revolution in October 2021, when the transitional government was overthrown by the military and dictatorship was re-imposed. In 2023, counter-revolution descended into civil war when the dictatorial forces of the military split into the rival camps of the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Response Forces (RSF).

The RSF, with the major backing of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and based in Arab militias that had carried out genocidal pogroms against Black Africans in Darfur more than ten years ago, has waged a brutal campaign that includes the goal of exterminating Black Africans from their territories and seizing natural resources for their foreign backers. Their brutality became most evident to the world in the siege of El-Fasher in 2025, when the RSF massacred tens of thousands of civilians after capturing the city following a long siege. [note - look up details for numbers] On the other side, the SAF maintains a dictatorial terror state that relies on Islamist militias to stay in power. Any independent activists in SAF-held territory are at constant risk of arbitrary arrest, torture, and death.

In the midst of this civil war, the embers of the revolution still burn. The Resistance Committees turned to mutual aid to meet the needs of the people during the war, opening many emergency kitchens to provide food for refugees. Unions continue their activities underground. Revolutionaries continue coming out onto the streets whenever an opening presents itself. As stability returns to some areas of Sudan, our anarchist comrades are moving forward to use every opportunity to continue the fight to for an end to the war, an end to dictatorship, and to take one step farther in our shared path to liberation.

ABOUT THE ANARCHIST GROUP IN SUDAN
The Anarchist Group in Sudan (AGS) founded their organization as a small group of five student comrades in April 2017, during an earlier wave of protest. They grew and spread across many universities, and achieved influence within the coalition of student unions.

During the beginning of the revolution, the AGS actively worked in the resistance committees and student organizations while still staying underground. Militants were able to advocate for anarchist positions and influence the direction of groups without publicly announcing themselves as anarchists. They saw anarchism as a pragmatic way to involve themselves in social struggle while contesting all of the authoritarian forces that oppress the Sudanese people, whether it be tribal, cultural, military, religious — a comprehensive struggle against all this and for freedom and individual rights.

Within the resistance committees, the AGS coordinated anarchist activity to push the committees in a more anti-authoritarian direction. Alongside the practical organizing work, the AGS initiated “thinking circles” to discuss anarchist ideas and worked on making anarchists texts available in Arabic. They put their modest membership dues to use printing anarchist pamphlets and organizing university events.

In the context of the nationwide general strike and final push to overthrow the dictatorship after the toppling of El-Bashir, the AGS first announced themselves to the public during a massive march in Khartoum on June 30th, 2019.

As the civil war began and armed conflict spread, anarchist comrades had two general approaches – to fight with independent resistance militias that attempt to defend the people from the ravages of the RSF and Sudanese Armed Forces, or to focus on avoiding armed confrontation through planting ideas and organizing at the grassroots to grow the movement. The AGS supports both strategic approaches currently, depending on what is needed in the local region. When possible, they help run communal kitchens, they help refugees reach safety, they provide medical care, they support resistance militias, and they continue anarchist propaganda.

While many parts of Sudan are in the grip of conflict, some zones are experiencing relative stability. As conditions stabilize, the AGF has expanded, opening two offices and re-establishing local chapters. In 2025, Black Rose Anarchist Federation ran a solidarity campaign to purchase an industrial printing press and import it from Egypt. The AGS now uses this printer to produce the many anarchist texts that they have translated, as well as meet the practical needs of students and others who are without books due to war shortages. As universities re-open in some territories, the AGS is re-engaging with organizing within the student movement.

The political goal of the AGS now is, in the most immediate term, the end of the war and of the massacres committed by both the RSF and army. In the longer term, they continue struggling to overcome the tribal and ethnic divisions that have been exacerbated by racist colonialism to win the social revolution and create a self-managed socialist and feminist society in Sudan and throughout Africa.

As the revolutionary movement continues this struggle, we have lost many martyrs, including AGS mmbers such as Omar Habbash, a doctor in Al Fashir, Sara, a leading activist in Khartoum, and others. [add other comrades] We always keep their memory and their fight alive.

ABOUT US
Black Anarchist Resistance - Sudan Solidarity is a campaign organized by a coalition of three groups:
  • Black Autonomy Federation
  • Black Rose Anarchist Federation / Federacion Anarquista Rosa Negra
  • Dugout Podcast
The Dugout and BRRN have long-standing close relationships with the AGS, and are now uniting their solidarity work into a shared campaign together with the BAF.

By creating an ongoing campaign we will provide necessary material support for our comrades without rushing to respond to urgent needs by launching one-off fundraising campaigns. Through this campaign, our comrades can have a reliable source of funds to advance their work.

The funds will be used for the organizational expenses of the Anarchist Group in Sudan, as decided through their internal democratic practices, including:
  • Legal fees
  • Financial support for individual members to replace income lost due to war and displacement
  • Printing & propaganda
  • Mutual aid work with internally displaced refugees
  • Space rental
  • Costs related to forced exile for comrades
Throughout the campaign, we will highlight specific needs and uses for funds.

The funds raised through this campaign will be collected by BRRN and sent by Western Union directly to our comrades in Sudan. Although OpenCollective does not take fees, all PayPay and card transaction incur fees, and Western Union also charges for transfers and currency exchange, resulting in 5-10% of donations going to covering fees.

By launching this campaign for anarchists in Sudan, and by organizing in-person fundraising events for it, we will be spreading education about African anarchism, making connections with local organizers who are committed to supporting African anarchism, and foregrounding internationalist Black liberation in our own organizations and movement work. Our coalition's politics center the fight against anti-Blackness across Sudan and the US, and specifically the violent containment of Black people through anti-migrant border regimes. As a campaign led by Black anarchists, we will be making the politics of Black anarchism integral to the effort. We will use this campaign as a platform for Black anarchism and as a space where Black anarchist comrades can to connect and work together on a national and international level.

While this campaign is starting out as an ongoing fundraising effort, through the events organized and the relationships built, we expect larger campaigns of action and solidarity to emerge.
