About
Vision
Since 2019, BlackLight has continued to interact with unique historical moments to create bridges to future possibilities and needs. Our platform acts as a celebratory space for Black, POC, and LGBTQIA+ people and an open invitation for participation, learning, and conversation with all. BlackLight seeks to ignite daring innovation and be a beacon that reveals the creativity in the DMV dance ecosystem.
Mission:
BlackLight, in practice, is a think & move-tank* that reenvisions dance activations as a conduit to galvanize the social imaginations, resilience, and inventiveness of citizens, thinkers, activists, and artists. This work uses the medium of dance/choreography as a catalyst to:
- Create a regional/national platform to amplify, inspire, and affirm the narratives/experiences of marginalized groups; specifically BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ communities.
- Facilitate an equitable presentation series for emerging/early career artists of color; specifically Black artists.
- Develop fertile educational experiences through immersive exposure and multifaceted access.
- Nurture courageous spaces that are invested in fostering dialogues with/for audiences and community members of the DMV.
- Activate community practices to face the grand challenges/opportunities of our time.
