Dear Esteemed Attendees, 

We hope this update finds you well and brimming with anticipation for the upcoming event of TEDxYouth@Paparangi 2023!  With the event happening later today, we are thrilled to ensure you have the event outline and essential details to have a truly enriching experience. 

Event Details
Date: 23rd August
Time: 6 pm to 9 pm
Venue: Newlands College Hall, 68 Bracken Road
Event Outline: TEDx speeches presented by our youth with the theme of ‘Now or Never’.

When you arrive at Newlands College, we would appreciate it if you could park up on Bracken Road, as the college will be busy with people around the time of the event. The event itself is in the Newlands College Hall, just down the main driveway (there will be signs guiding you in the right direction!). Please make your way to the hall to scan your ticket in the foyer and head into the venue.

With our Jazz Band setting an exciting mood, between doors opening at 5:30 pm and the event start time (6:00 pm) will also be a fantastic opportunity to connect with booth representatives, fellow attendees, and our event committee, who share your passion for ideas worth spreading. We are happy to announce booths from Voice of Aroha and Save the Children. Note that there will be audio recording happening at the Voice of Aroha booth.

Important Notes
  • Entering the event: Kindly ensure that you have your e-ticket (sent via email) for a smooth admission process.  
  • Taking notes: Feel free to bring your own notepad, pen, and any other materials you'd like for taking notes.
  • Photography and videography: Photos and videos are permitted during the event; please remember to use our official hashtag: #TEDxYouth@Paparangi

Event Timeline

Doors open - 5:30 PM.
Our Event Committee members will be ready at the door to welcome you in and scan your ticket! The Newlands College Jazz Band will be playing until the start of the event.

Opening Ceremony - 6 PM.
Our event will kick off with an inspiring opening ceremony that sets the tone for a night full of thought-provoking talks and discussions. 


Talk 1, Finding Aotearoa’s story with the Power of Indigenous Wisdom - 6:10 PM.
Lizzie Evans challenges conventional wisdom by presenting a groundbreaking approach to how Māori culture can continue to thrive for upcoming generations.

Talk 2, Being a second-generation immigrant living in a Global Era - 6:20 PM.
Gargi Vaidya explains through her own inspiring story, as well as groundbreaking statistics, ideas such as migration, identity, integration, and more.

Performance by Swadha Makhija - 6:30 PM.
Swadha sings ‘From The Start’ by Laufey and ‘No Time To Die’ by Billie Eilish.

Talk 3, Steps to Excellence - 6:40 PM.
Joseph Asfaw will delve into the significance of embracing your own experiences, through his own story on the road to creating change.

Question time, round one - 6:50 PM.
Audience questions will be answered, and there will be a discussion with the first three speakers.

Intermission - 7 PM.
Take a breather, grab a cup of coffee, and engage in discussions with fellow attendees. Catering will be provided, and toilets can be found in the hall foyer. This is your chance to exchange ideas and make valuable connections, and to interact with the booths presented by our sponsors.

Talk 4, Using Indigenous knowledge to navigate through environmental challenges - 7:40 PM.
Kaita Tahi Hummel-Jibiki takes us on a journey through the latest advancements, offering a glimpse into the future. Kaita explains the concept of whakapapa and ancestral connections to the rivers, and how this shapes the relationship with the natural world.

Talk 5, The Kaupapa of being Unapologetically Māori - 7:50 PM.
Maysen Hineraukura Pappafloratos provides us with valuable insights into how the concept of being unapologetically Māori has been misinterpreted.

Performance by NC HipHop - 8:00 PM.
An energetic dance from the Newlands College student-choreographed hip-hop crew.

Talk 6, Child Organ Trafficking - 8:05 PM.
Giorgia Dixon shares important awareness about the problems of the dark beast which is child organ trafficking, delivered in style through slam poetry.

Question time, round two - 8:15 PM.
The final chance for audience questions to be answered, and a discussion with the final three speakers for the night.

Closing Ceremony - 8:30 PM. 
We will wrap up the night with a heartfelt closing ceremony, celebrating the power of ideas and the connections we've made.
