Headstone Cleaning Commitments: 2023
Published on February 15, 2023 by Kiah Mott-Wright

While 2022 was a year of great growth for our small collective in terms of volunteer numbers, headstones cleaned, and community enrichment, we hope to see even more growth in 2023.

In 2023, we plan to continue to:
  • Work with cemetery superintendents, including our resident Advisor, to continue identifying historic headstones and monuments that require cleaning.
  • Carefully train and mobilize our volunteers, working collectively to execute our projects.
  • Retain membership to the Cemetery Conservators for United Standards and uphold their methods and practices.
  • Extensively document the "before" and "after" condition of the monuments we clean and retain those files for our records.
  • Educate our community on the importance of cemetery conservation by hosting seminars and meetups.
  • Working with experts in the field and expanding our expertise via education.
In 2023, it is our ardent hope that we:
  • Find a Fiscal Host via Open Collective who will support our collective so we may accept donations from grateful community members and expand our service area.
  • That our Fiscal Host is able to endow with the ability to submit expenses and be reimbursed for the cleaners and tools that we are currently purchasing out-of-pocket.
  • Grow in volunteer numbers and host regular cleanings attended by larger groups of eager volunteers.
  • Engage educational institutions and museums in our area through active collaboration.
  • Develop educational and documentation materials that all interested volunteers may access.
