2022 Year End Update

1. What did you accomplish during 2022? How did you use money?
In 2022, we brought 24 beds and other furniture to 28 movees over 21 moves, which is almost 2 moves per month.
We received a generous recurring donation from a partner organization, UnlockNYC, and we have already moved furniture to a few of their clients.
Additionally, StorageMart, where we have a storage unit, offered us a larger unit for storing surplus furniture and other household items. StorageMart also agreed to waive rental fees for another year.
The majority of the funds were used to rent moving trucks, gas costs, and lunches for volunteers.
2. What challenges did you face during 2022? What did your Collective learn? How did you change or grow?
In 2022, we started to notice lower volunteer capacity and some difficulty recruiting new folks. We learned to divvy up tasks to create more roles, such as designating a volunteer coordinator and a day-of volunteer wrangler. This reduced stress on roles such as the project manager and brought more volunteers into the planning phases. We hope that this kind of participation helps volunteers feel more included in the moving support project.
Due to limited funding capacity from another partner organization and rising truck rental and gas costs, we are beginning to need more contributions to keep this mutual aid project going.
Also, there was a short gap between the StorageMart lease renewal, and so we incurred hefty fees of up to $300/month for 3 months to rent the unit.
3. What are your plans for 2023? Anything exciting coming up?
After a year-end rest, in 2023 we will continue moving for our formerly unhoused neighbors - there are a lot of people who need beds! As 2022 comes to a close, we humbly ask for your continued support, whether through time or funding, into 2023.
