It's July--16 months in...
Published on July 11, 2021 by Ellen Y Kuwana

The June 19 event with Top Chef "cheftestants" Shota Nakajima and 5 other chefs from Top Chef was amazing! Many thanks to Chef Shota and team, plus chefs Gabe Erales, Sara Hauman, Brittanny Anderson, Roscoe Hall, and Sasha Grumman.

Gilbert Cellars donated the wine--and if you have not tried their rosé, red blend, or unoaked Chardonnay, you are in for a treat!

We continue to feed the frontline--and I am grateful that a new friend Jenne has stepped up to volunteer and take much of the meal coordination on to free up some of my time. Another volunteer, Kathleen, has been ordering mainly from restaurants in the International District for various medical and dental clinics, including Swedish Hospital. Jenne is coordinating ongoing meals for COVID-19 vaccine sites for Neighborcare Clinics and others. Next week we are doing approximately 133 meals. The Neighborcare Clinics will be about 272 meals over the course of the next 5 weeks.

I continue, with my friend Brigitta, to get Mighty-O donuts to teachers and childcare staff (Boys & Girls Clubs, YMCA, various schools) as well as to social programs such as SolidGround and FamilyWorks, as well as the foodbank every Wednesday and Thursday.

During the Seattle heatwave, we made sure to get water to frontline workers, as well as Jamba Juice treats to UW Husky Stadium COVID-19 testing site, as those workers were out on the asphalt all day for whoever needed a COVID-19 test for any reason, including to be cleared for international travel.

Chef Shota has been a welcome addition to WeGotThisSeattle, with his easy laugh and can-do energy. He and I feel a strong connection to the International District and want to do all that we can to help it come back strong! As long as funds hold out, we are paying for security guards to walk Chinatown/International District from midnight to 4am each Friday and Saturday nights. Sadly, windows are still being smashed. Today, Jenne and I met for lunch in the ID and had a wonderful meal at Phnom Penh (913 S. Jackson St)--we went first to Jade Garden, which was hopping and had a line--so wonderful to see!

We are starting to run low on funds, but people have always stepped forward, so we will continue to do this as long as there are funds and a need. Again, thank you for your part in WeGotThisSeattle! One person CAN make a difference, and together we are stronger! Every dollar is appreciated, and no donation is too small. Donations are tax-deductible and 100% of what WeGetThisSeattle ends up with is spent at local businesses to support essential workers. As we enjoy the sunny weather, take a moment to think about what you are grateful for.

I am grateful to have had the opportunity to do something to help during the pandemic, I am grateful that I have met the people I met along the way (owners and chefs at Zaika, Taste of India, Mark Thai Food Box, Portage Bay, Kaspar's, Gourmondo, Homegrown, Purple Dot, Tai Tung, Pagliacci, Rubenstein Bagels, Starbucks, especially the Madison Park store and manager Caley, Sweet Alchemy, Chef Shota...so many people helped out!)
Thank you, and stay safe!
