PROJECT

Capturing the stories of the elder generations to inform the present and future

About

This project has been undertaken in association with NMMULTIMEDIA. It involves capturing the life stories and learnings of the whaanau of the collectives we will work with. The idea behind this project is to utilize the learnings of the elder generations to inform the present and future.

As a researcher I identify the need for our whaanau to feel heard. Gang spaces are found on the margins of society and oftentimes are suppressed and made to feel what they have to share is not important. My study looks to the impacts of this dynamic on the children who then inherit a need to feel heard, this can often play out in ways which can be quite negative if not channeled correctly.

in this light capturing koorero is an important part of this mahi. It gives the whaanau within our collectives a chance to have their say and to share their life experiences and all they have learned from them. Each interview is precious and will form a part of the whole. This resource then is a taonga for the collectives we will work with. It will help to inform future generations of the learnings in which they can build upon.
