Te Tairāwhiti
‘Whiti Te Rā’ literally means sunrise or the shining sun, but more than this, it’s a whakaaro that speaks to new beginnings - moving from darkness into the light. ‘Whiti Te Rā’ relates to the aspirations that we have for a Film Festival and our rangatahi. Te Rā is a significant part of our identity in Te Tairāwhiti - we are the first place to see the sun.

A three-year project building something lasting: a rangatahi-led indigenous film festival that begins as a pilot, grows into Te Tairāwhiti’s first official indigenous film festival, and ultimately opens Te Tairāwhiti, and its rangatahi, to the world. Each year builds on the last with more rangatahi progressing from learners into leaders, and each year, the festival’s reach, its mana, and its economic impact on the region grows.
