About
WildfireMesh is a collaborative group of technology and telecommunications activists dedicated to facilitating the adoption of Meshtastic for firefighters in Argentina. Our core purpose is to improve communication during natural disasters, particularly wildfires, where existing methods like cell phones and VHF/UHF radios often fail in remote areas. We aim to bridge the information and adaptation gap of LoRa mesh technologies for emergency teams, fostering local expertise and knowledge exchange. Meshtastic offers a vital complementary off-grid communication platform that allows crucial information like location, instructions, and situational awareness to be shared even when primary systems are down.
Our story is rooted in direct engagement with the firefighting community. We have established relationships with volunteer fire brigades in three Argentine provinces—Sierra de los Padres and Coronel Dorrego in Buenos Aires, Unquillo in Córdoba, and El Bolsón in Río Negro. These brigades have validated the critical need for Meshtastic and expressed strong interest in participating in its adoption.
Our vision extends beyond technology deployment; we are deeply committed to creating a self-sustaining community of firefighters around open telecommunications and Meshtastic. We plan to build a peer-learning network where firefighters, ham radio operators, and non-technical individuals can collaborate, share challenges, and find joint solutions. A key part of this is the creation of comprehensive resources in Spanish, including installation manuals, troubleshooting guides, and technical documentation designed collaboratively "from firefighters for firefighters". This is crucial as the official Meshtastic documentation is currently entirely in English, posing a significant barrier to accessibility. All content and software generated by the project will be open source, promoting the freedom to experiment, build, communicate, and share information without restrictions.
