Creating a safer space at the workshop tonight
Published on July 6, 2022 by Mihai

Self- and other-care reinforce each other! Here's what we can all try to do to make the workshop space safer for all of us:

1. Care for privacy

Helps us all show up with authenticity.
If (even slightly) intimate things come up, recount your experience in the workshop without identifying information, including gender or place names, etc. Read more here.

2. Minimize interruptions

Deeper things come through when we don't feel rushed or pressured.
Please keep interruptions to a minimum. However, that doesn't mean you can't…

3. Engage silently, too

It helps us feel heard
It’s really motivating to get feedback, especially when the others are silent when we speak, so please engage to help everyone feel part of the group. Check out the Occupy movement hand signals for a primer.

4. Present yourself

Makes connection more likely
When speaking for the first time, say your name, maybe the community(es) you’re from, and how you heard of this workshop.

5. Welcome emotions

Allows us to show up in all our complexity
Emotions are inevitable. The more we make space for them — in others and ourselves — the less we need to hide, and the better we get at engaging with them in the best, most flexible way.
