Request Details
We are requesting £250 from POP to support our Plymouth Young City Laureate 2022 programme. This programme builds on a successful collaboration between Literature Works and Plymouth City Council to find a Young City Laureate for Plymouth between 2018-2021 and the young person chosen in 2022 will be the fourth person to hold the role.

This year, building on the successful model of the Plymouth Laureate of Words programme (which £250 a POP kindly supported last year with a grant for work with young people), we have partnered with Plymouth City Council, Plymouth Culture and the With Flying Colours project to launch the call out for the Young City Laureate in 2022.

A young person aged 14-19 who lives, works or studies in Plymouth will be selected to represent the city and its young people by writing commissions - presented by Literature Works and organisations across Plymouth - and attending civic and specially organised events that will showcase their time as Young City Laureate.

This year -  unlike in previous years when this opportunity has been run as a competition with a one off prize - the young person will be paid for their commissions and attendance at two events across their term in the role. We think that this provides the young person with valuable experience of being paid as a writer. Throughout the year we will connect the young person with organisations across the city and opportunities to develop their own writing. We will also support them to develop performance and public speaking skills throughout.

The four partners on the programme are contributing some funds (£100 per partner) to enable us to invite guest writers to appear at the events with the young person and the grant we are requesting from POP would be used to pay the young person for their commissioned work and event appearance fees as outlined above. This grant would therefore be directly benefiting a young person in the city and supporting their development as a writer.

In previous years, the Young City Laureates have appeared at events such as the Christmas lights switch on and remembrance commemorations and have produced commissions responding to major civic events such as the Mayflower 400 commemorations and a poetry exchange with America. We hope to get this year's Young City Laureate involved in British Art Show 9, a major event for the city and also to connect them to Laura Horton, our current Plymouth Laureate of Words for a special event. This will be in addition to other responses to major city events.

Supporting statements from the partners:

Councillor Dave Downie, Plymouth City Council’s Cabinet Member for Education and Skills and Children and Young People said: “We have some incredibly talented young people in Plymouth and this is a fantastic opportunity. I’m really pleased the Council is working with Literature Works to support this fantastic project.”

Helen Chaloner, CEO of Literature Works said: “The Young City Laureate is a great initiative for Plymouth and one of which the city can be rightfully proud. It’s not every city that supports and encourages the creativity and expression of young voices in this way. The partnership with Plymouth City Council, Plymouth Culture and With Flying Colours shows a commitment to nurturing young writing talent which will pay dividends. We can’t wait to see who comes forward.”

Hannah Harris Chief Executive of Plymouth Culture said: “As the sector support organisation for the creative and cultural industries in Plymouth, and being part of the partnership between Literature Works and The Box that supports the City Laureate of Word programme, Plymouth Culture sees the Plymouth Young City Laureate 2022 as another strong opportunity to explore and challenge Plymouth’s history, culture and people through writing. We are most excited to do so through a young voice that will bring new views to the city’s life and stories while developing her/his skills and creative practice.”

Jess Blackledge from the With Flying Colours project said: “We are supporting the Young City Laureate project because we see potential in young people when it comes to the arts, we want to support Plymouth-based projects to expand the reach of arts offers to as many young people as possible. WFC is a Plymouth Cultural Education Project and one of our outcomes is to develop this PCEP network to become a strong body which has impact and reach. Supporting this initiative is a fantastic way to develop the PCEP and to enable schools, teachers, young people to connect with arts and cultural organisations across their city.”

Outgoing Mayflower 400 Young City Laureate Holly Peters said:
“Although I could never have imagined what the world would be like during my time as Plymouth’s Mayflower 400 Young City Laureate, it has been the most valuable experience for me as a writer. The role has allowed me to learn about many important cultures and fascinating people as well as develop my craft as a poet and my confidence as a person. Plymouth is a vibrant city with a lively art sector, which I’m honoured to have been a part of it and I am extremely grateful to Literature Works and Plymouth City Council for granting me this opportunity.”
