ADLT end of year What's Up-Date 2023
Published on December 21, 2023 by Ayudantes De La Tierra

As we approach the end of another remarkable year at Ayudantes De La Tierra (ADLT), we are thrilled to share the significant milestones, accomplishments, and impact we've achieved together with our dedicated team, partners, and community. In this end-of-year update, we reflect on our journey, highlight our achievements, and express our deep gratitude for the support that has enabled us to make a positive difference in the lives of farm workers and their families in the Salinas Valley.

What we accomplished during 2023 and how we used money to further our mission:

In 2023, Ayudantes De La Tierra (ADLT) achieved significant milestones in our ongoing mission to support the farm worker community in the Salinas Valley. One of our most significant accomplishments was securing fiscal hosting with the Open Collective Foundation (OCF), which allowed us to expand our impact and receive tax-deductible donations to further our initiatives.

Throughout the year, we organized and successfully executed two crucial distribution events. These distributions were pivotal in providing immediate relief and addressing the pressing needs of farm worker families within our community. During our 9th distribution, we conducted a needs assessment to ensure we understand the needs of the community and are working towards meeting those.
One of the most impactful ways we utilized the funds was by ensuring that every family had access to essential supplies. We provided first aid kits to promote health and safety within households, recognizing the importance of immediate medical assistance. Additionally, access to clean drinking water is always a top priority, and we brought every family gallons of drinking water.

A specific need that was identified during our needs assessment was blankets. It gets incredibly cold in the Salinas Valley and the buildings are poorly insulated. We distributed multiple blankets to each family during our 10th distribution. And, in preparation for potential power outages during winter storms, we equipped every household with flashlights to ensure they had a source of light and safety during emergencies.
In summary, 2023 was a year of tangible achievements for ADLT. We used the funds to provide essential support to farm worker families, focusing on their health, safety, and well-being. The fiscal hosting with OCF allowed us to expand our reach, making a positive impact on the lives of those we serve in the Salinas Valley community.

2023 challenges, what we learned from them, and how we grew:

In 2023, ADLT’s primary challenge was in determining the best path forward for our mutual aid organization. We recognized the need to legitimize our work, organize our finances, and become eligible for additional funding and grants to expand our impact in the Salinas Valley community. This challenge prompted us to explore how to take the next step effectively.

Our response to this challenge came in the form of fiscal hosting with the Open Collective Foundation (OCF). This strategic decision provided ADLT with a clear and efficient path forward. OCF offers a supportive community, a structured financial framework, and an accessible platform to facilitate our organization's growth. Through fiscal hosting, we not only addressed our immediate challenges but also positioned ourselves to better serve our community in the long term.

As part of our growth and development, we have been actively working on clarifying team member roles within ADLT. As our efforts expand, it's crucial to ensure that each team member's responsibilities are well-defined and our strengths are highlighted. We want to make sure that all of us continue to feel supported and uplifted in engaging in this work.  These steps will enable us to work more efficiently and effectively in achieving our mission.

In summary, 2023 brought the challenge of organizational development and sustainability for ADLT. Through fiscal hosting with OCF and a commitment to clarifying team roles, we learned valuable lessons about adaptability, community support, and the importance of structured growth. These experiences have strengthened our organization and will continue to guide us as we move forward in creating positive change for the farm worker community in the Salinas Valley.
