About
The goal of this project is to raise funds to purchase a bulk order of Paved Paradise: How Parking Explains the World to deliver to local elected officials in the Baltimore area. The inspiration for this project comes from Paved Paradise itself, which relates the following vignette:
In 2015 Minneapolis Planning Commissioner Chris Meyer bought 13 copies of the High Cost of Free Parking, 1 for each member of the city council. By 2020 the City Council had opted to eliminate parking minimums city wide.
This is expanded upon in this local news article from Minneapolis that also relates the anecdote.
Paved Paradise as a gifted book improves upon The High Cost of Free Parking by being not only recently released, and therefore current on recent developments and policy advances around the country, but also more approachable to the average reader. This project will allow us at Strong Towns Baltimore to not just summarize the arguments of parking reform, but allow our local legislators and executive branch leaders to take the journey on their own. It's important that we try to provide this to all members of both the City and County councils as parking reform is really about good government, reducing inefficiencies and hidden subsidies - concepts that should cross partisan and ideological lines on the councils.
