¿Qué lograron durante el 2022? ¿Cómo usaron el dinero?
¡Logramos mucho este año! Tuvimos nuestra segunda conferencia virtual Bike!Bike! En todas partes! 2022. Si te perdiste alguno de los talleres (o quieres volver a ver tus favoritos) la mayoría de las grabaciones están colgadas en Archive.org en inglés y en español.
Gracias a todes por sus donativos. Como comunidad pudimos usar esos recursos para pagar a traductores e intérpretes por su tiempo, esfuerzo y experiencia. Así como lo hicimos el año pasado, este año la conferencia fue completamente bilingüe en español e inglés, pero mientras el año pasado nadie facilitó un taller en español ¡este año tuvimos tres talleres presentados en español! Además, tuvimos un aumento de 60% en el número de asistentes cuyo idioma principal es el español. La traducción y la interpretación nos permitieron compartir conocimientos y experiencias con personas a través de las Américas y por lo menos un continente más.
También recibimos los primeros donativos al fondo de tecnología, incluyendo un donativo recurrente! Hace un año, bikebike.org y todas las tarifas de alojamiento web y mantenimiento eran cubiertas exclusivamente por Godwin. El dominio bikecollectives.org era propiedad del Utah Bicycle Collective - aunque no lo sabían y una vez accidentalmente cerraron la página. Estos nuevos donativos cubren algunos de los costos de alojamiento web mientras cambiamos ambas páginas a un proveedor de alojamiento con más recursos a un mejor precio. Estamos transitando de ser completamente dependientes de la generosidad de una sola persona, a un enfoque sostenido por la comunidad. Ahora hay un equipo pequeño de voluntaries trabajando en el mantenimiento y la actualización de ambas páginas para que puedan seguir siendo recursos para nuestra comunidad y para futuras conferencias de Bike!Bike! y Bike!Bike! En todas partes!
¿Cuáles retos enfrentaron durante el 2022? ¿Qué aprendió su colectiva? ¿Cómo cambió o creció?
Crecimos como comunidad. El equipo de planeación de este año fue completamente internacional y bastante bilingüe. Vinimos de Chile, México, Estados Unidos y Canadá
Retos que enfrentamos y cosas que aprendimos
- La necesidad de más voluntaries para la planeación - necesitamos un equipo más grande para repartir la carga. Específicamente, necesitamos a más personas trabajando en redes sociales y extensión.
- Aprendimos que si guardamos todos nuestros correos en un solo documento de plantillas, podemos reciclar el lenguaje de esos correos el próximo año y pasar más tiempo concentrándonos en otras cosas!
- Husos horarios - el equipo de planeación estaba en distintos husos horarios y con agendas de trabajo/vida variadas. Por ejemplo, ocasionalmente había cambio de horario en determinado huso horario pero no en otros! Averiguar cuál es el horario que mejor nos funciona a todes para reunirnos es un proyecto en curso.
- Tratamos de no hacer las cosas de último minuto, pero como éramos pocas personas en el equipo, muchas cosas fueron muy de último minuto. Por ejemplo, no encontramos voluntaries para manejar zoom hasta después del ensayo general, lo que significó muchas capacitaciones individuales por lo que les voluntaries pasaron casi el mismo tiempo en capacitaciones que haciendo voluntariado. Lección aprendida: hay que asignar varios turnos a les voluntaries de zoom.
- Aprendimos que necesitamos darnos más tiempo ¡Cuando el calendario de planeación marca una fecha límite, necesitamos respetarla!
- Problemas técnicos - por ejemplo, el año pasado los sitios web se cayeron varias veces. Este año aprendimos el comando correcto para hacer actualizaciones y lo tuvimos listo para arreglar los sitios si se caían. Nuestro equipo técnico ha avanzado mucho en actualizar nuestro antiguo y personalizado software de backend.
- Aprendimos que el trabajo no para cuando termina la conferencia! Es difícil dar cierre a la conferencia anterior y al mismo tiempo tratar de incorporar a nuevas personas que están emocionadas por participar en la planeación a futuro.
¿Cuáles son sus planes para el 2023? ¿algo emocionante ocurrirá?
Todavía estamos averiguándolo y reuniendo el equipo nuevo ¿Habrá otra conferencia grande como el año pasado? ¿trataremos de hacer varios eventos más pequeños? El tiempo lo dirá. Depende del interés y la disponibilidad de les voluntaries. Sin importar la dirección que tomemos, seguiremos manteniendo recursos en línea para facilitar la comunicación y colaboración entre organizaciones y proyectos comunitarios centrados en las bicicletas.

En todas partes! de este año están listes para pasar las responsabilidades a un equipo nuevo. Como la justicia del lenguaje es prioridad para nuestra comunidad, algunas habilidades en ambos idiomas, español e inglés, ayudan. Todo lo demás depende de ti ¿cuáles habilidades o experiencias tienes o quieres aprender para ayudar a B!B!E! a seguir creciendo? El primer paso es comenzar a asistir a las reuniones. INTERCAMBIO CON PERSONAS DE LA COMUNIDAD DE BICICLETAS
En enero empezaremos con sesiones de intercambio de idiomas semanales donde podremos practicar español e inglés y ayudarnos a aprender en una atmósfera amigable. Les participantes platicarán la mitad del tiempo en español y la otra mitad en inglés ¡Principiantes bienvenides! What did you accomplish during 2022? How did you use money?
We accomplished a lot this year! We hosted the second virtual Bike!Bike! conference: Bike!Bike! Everywhere! 2022. If you missed any of the workshops (or want to re-watch your favorites) most of the recordings are now posted on Archive.org in English and Spanish.
Thank you all so much for your donations. As a community we were able to use those donations to pay translators and interpreters for their time, effort, and expertise. The conference was fully bilingual in Spanish and English last year as well, but where nobody presented or facilitated a workshop in Spanish last year, this year there were three workshops presented in Spanish! We also had a 60% increase in registrants whose primary language is Spanish. Translation and interpretation allowed us all to share knowledge and experiences with people throughout the Americas and on at least one other continent.
We also received the first few donations to the Tech fund, including a recurring donation! A year ago, bikebike.org and all the hosting and maintenance fees were covered almost exclusively by Godwin. The domain bikecollectives.org was owned by the Utah Bicycle Collective - even though they didn’t know it and once accidentally shut down the site. These new donations are covering some of the hosting costs while we move both websites to a new hosting provider with more resources at a better price. We are moving from being entirely dependent on one person’s generosity to a community-supported approach. There is now a small team of tech volunteers working on maintenance and upgrades for both websites so they can continue to be resources for our community and for future Bike!Bike! and Bike!Bike! Everywhere! conferences.
What challenges did you face during 2022? What did your Collective learn? How did you change or grow?
We grew as a community. This year’s planning team was fully international and pretty bilingual. We came from Chile, Mexico, the USA, and Canada.
Challenges we faced and things we learned:
- Needing more planning volunteers - we needed a bigger team to distribute the load. In particular, we needed more people working on social media and outreach in general.
- We learned that if we store all our emails in a single “templates” document, we can recycle language from these emails next year and spend more time focusing on other things!
- Time zones - The planning team was in a variety of different time zones and work/life schedules, and, for example, occasionally there would be a time change in one time zone but not another! Figuring out a meeting time that will work for everyone is an ongoing project.
- We tried to not be last minute, but with limited volunteers, some things were still very last minute. For example, we didn’t find zoom tech volunteers until after the dress rehearsal and scheduling meant we did a lot of one-on-one training, spending nearly as much time with each zoom tech as they would then spend on volunteering. Lesson learned: zoom techs should be assigned multiple shifts.
- We learned that we need to give ourselves more time. When the planning calendar gives us a deadline, we need to stick to it!
- Tech issues - for one example, last year the websites went down a couple of times during the event. This year, we had the correct update command ready to go to fix the website if it went down! Our tech team has been making good progress in updating our ancient custom backend software.
- We learned that the work doesn’t stop when the conference ends! It’s hard to close out the old conference while simultaneously trying to on-board new people who are excited to be a part of planning for the future.
What are your plans for 2023? Anything exciting coming up?
We are still figuring that out and gathering the new team. Will there be another big conference like last year? Will we try to do a few smaller mini-B!B!E!?s?! Only time will tell. Depends on volunteer interest and availability. Whatever direction we take, we will continue maintaining online resources for community bike organizations and finding ways to help community bike projects communicate and collaborate.

INTERCAMBIO WITH COMMUNITY BIKE PEOPLE
In January, we are starting weekly Intercambio (language exchange) sessions where we can practice English or Spanish and help other learners in a friendly atmosphere.
