2023 End of Year Update
Published on December 2, 2023 by Dave Best

This is our first update since we joined Open Collective. It's been a bumpy year for us. Near the beginning of the year, we got the news that Code For America, our previous fiscal host, was shuttering its brigade program. There was a lot of back and forth with them and internal conversations about transition options.

In the end, we decided that we'd prefer to use another group as a fiscal host rather than going through the process of setting up our own 501c3. We re-aligned ourselves from Code For America to the Alliance of Civic Technologists, and joined the Open Collective Foundation. Open Collective has been a great new fiscal host for the group.

With the uncertainty around funds and where we'd land, we've been very slow to reach into the coffers to pay for new things. We use donations to cover the occasional hosting and domain bills. In 2024, those requests will run through this new platform.

We've done several projects and mini-workshops throughout the year. We worked with Preservation Dayton to update some reports showing the value/importance of historical neighborhoods, supported neighborhoods submitting EPA FOIA requests, we continued to support the Essential Artists program, and we continued to maintain the Monty Lots web application. From the workshop perspective, we did sessions focused on QGIS, Jupyter Notebooks, and Generative AI for SQL database queries.

In 2024, we will continue to seek out new nonprofits to support and grow our tech skills. We want to turn Code For Dayton into the best place for technologists to dig into "civic service projects" that utilize their technology skills to have a positive impact on their communities.
