About
HELPING HOMES STAY WARM ACROSS THE TOP OF THE SOUTH
We receive donations of secondhand curtains, from various sources, and redistribute them to families identified as being in need. We work with Te Piki Oranga's Healthy Homes Initiative to identify the households where good curtains are needed to help keep their homes warmer, but who are unable to afford to purchase curtains. The curtains are provided free to the recipient families. We also hope to be able to help with installation if needed. We hope, in the near future, to also take referrals from other social service agencies.
Curtains can play a significant role in making a home warmer, healthier and more energy efficient. Curtains can significantly reduce heat loss through windows: a square metre of uncovered window can lose four or five times as much heat as an uninsulated wall.

The key goal is to contribute to reducing housing-related illnesses, hospitalisations, and health inequalities by improving the living conditions for low-income families, especially those with young children or pregnant mothers who are most vulnerable to poor housing.
This initiative may also help to divert some curtains from landfill by providing an avenue through which curtains that need mending or alteration can be 'upcycled' and reused rather than dumped.
