About

Ubuntu: Healing Racism within us and our Communities

Let's explore white privilege and systemic racism in our lives, and how they show up.

The issues of global warming and the climate crisis also touch on matters of climate justice, and this cannot be separated from other justice issues like racism, sexism, class, colonisation, collective trauma and more.

Racism, sexism, ableism and gender etc, can be understood as structural and systemic issues, which means they show up in unconscious behaviour, assumptions and interactions. There is a sense of ‘right’ and ‘wrong’, ‘good’ or ‘bad’ that gets triggered amongst us but which can then prevent further dialogue, and leads to stuckness rather than creativity. Racism was done and it can be undone through effective community, individual and institutional change.

What previous participants say about this training...

"I understand more clearly the relationship between white supremacy and racism and the destructive path we humans are on."

"I have learned that I know very little and that allows me to drop into the child-space of curiosity, wonder and openness to learning and growing."

"The training provided an opportunity and a safe space in which to explore a taboo subject without fear of judgement."

"I am so grateful as the training has raised many relevant concrete doorways for me where I can go forward with this dismantling racism work, inner and outer."

What to Expect:

This 3-day journey will be a combination of presentations and facilitated experiential reflections. About donations

We invite you to contribute here. Each volunteer’s place on the training costs GBP 80. Donations above that level help pay for others who can't afford the full cost. We are requesting a minimum donation of GBP 5 because personal commitment to doing life-changing work like this can be supported by the act of making a donation in exchange - even a small one.

Any funds raised in excess of the amount needed for this training will be used on other projects related to Diversity and Decolonising in the Deep Adaptation Forum.

Looking after Yourself

As we embark on this intensive, three-day experience we want to encourage all of you to think carefully about how you will take responsibility for your health and wellbeing during and after the programme. This is particularly important because:
·  ‘Race’ work is difficult for everyone and can activate pre-existing trauma.
·  Most importantly – in an online setting, we all work with fewer, and different, visual and physical cues to help us navigate our own feelings and the impact on us of the emotions of others. It can be harder to settle our bodies and – crucially – facilitators will not be able physically to check in with any participant after a session who may be experiencing or exhibiting stress reactions.

For these reasons, we need each of you to be responsible for your wellbeing:
· Please think carefully whether you are inwardly resourced to undertake this challenging work at this time. If you have any concerns or doubts, please contact us and let’s talk about it – we would rather a participant withdraw from the programme than that they push themselves beyond their limits.
· If you are currently in therapy or taking psychiatric medication, we strongly suggest you speak to your therapist, doctor, psychiatrist etc. about the advisability of you doing this work now. We are not offering individual therapeutic intervention.
· Please think in advance about how you will take care of yourself during and after each day’s session and after the end of the course. Please don’t try to do this work and your ‘day job’ at the same time. Plan how to give yourself space/time to process or centre yourself – and whether you need to make special arrangements to ensure you have some alone time or some company, as appropriate to your needs.

This training is offered in partnership with Radical Joy for Hard Times and the Permaculture CoLab
