About
DECULT is there to stop coercive control and prevent undue influence from high-demand groups and
radicalised international disinformation movements in Aotearoa New Zealand. Because there is no
agency or non-secular organisation in NZ to do this work, unlike in many western countries, we are
building a momentum and a larger network to educate professionals and the public about harmful
dynamics, human rights violations and sexual, spiritual and emotional abuse in cult-like groups.
To give cult victims a stronger voice, we are inviting survivors, researchers, counsellors and authors
to share their knowledge with frontline responders, allies and the public at an annual Australasian
cult awareness conference: DECULT, which will be held initially at Tūranga (Christchurch Library)
from 19 – 20 October 2024. More DECULT conferences and satellite events can happen across other
cities in Aotearoa New Zealand and Australia over the following years.
DECULT will have Māori, Pasifika, Pākehā and international speakers with a special focus on
counselling, LGBTQ+ issues and #MeToo. Workshops and panels will cover topics such as second
generation “cult kids”, sexual abuse trauma, indoctrination, legal rights and recovery.
