About
Diaspora Futures is a space of meeting, dreaming and collective care.
We work to nourish and strengthen the bodies, minds and souls of people of colour in the
climate justice movement. We do this through events and workshops featuring music, art,
dreaming, food, ancestral dialogue, and nature connection.
● We nourish our creativity through collective healing, care, and liberation.
● We draw on our lived experiences, valuing the knowledge, perspectives, insights,
and understanding they bring us.
● We affirm the unique journeys and relationships each PoC has with their community,
culture, and histories.
● We honour the depth of our histories, cultures, and faith/spiritual practices for their
wisdom.
● We acknowledge and challenge oppression in all its historical, structural, and
individual forms.
● We continually reflect on the safety of our spaces, ensuring PoC are seen, heard,
and valued, thriving in their full humanity and gifts.
● We share, collaborate, and learn with each other to support PoC and communities of
colour in achieving justice.
● We celebrate PoC, uplifting the essential work they are doing to address climate,
ecological, and social injustices.
● We believe in the power of solidarity between UK diaspora communities and frontline
communities globally.
Our History
Since December 2019, Diaspora Futures has organised workshops at The Advocacy
Academy and online to facilitate exchanges among PoC in the climate space. We have
hosted two informal dinners—one after COP26 and another in Spring 2023—connecting with
international activists. Our largest event, held at Hackney City Farm in Summer 2023,
welcomed over 75 attendees in collaboration with multiple artists and intergenerational
collectives.
These events have greatly strengthened the PoC climate movement, fostering healing and
genuine connections outside of often-hostile spaces. However, organising these events is
challenging, as many of us are already stretched thin or experiencing burnout from working
within extractive systems. We manage this by upholding values of generosity, deep listening,
and honesty, and by collaborating with other collectives to share the workload and enrich our
events with diverse perspectives and skills.
