About
Australian Disability is a charitable organisation dedicated to fairness, dignity, and equality for people with disabilities to enable their full participation in our Australian society.
Founded in 2012 on the principle that discrimination and stigma but also the culture towards disability have to change and be reshaped and owned by people living with the daily effects, positive and negative, of disability.
Only through an authentic conversation about disability affairs, is it possible to create a dialogue to enable the creation of change against the backdrop of discrimination and intolerance given an avenue to a better, accessible, and more inclusive society
Our mission is to create a more inclusive and accessible society for people with all forms of disabilities based on the guiding values of fairness, equality, dignity for all, accountability and transparency.
We are governed and run by people with disabilities, with their equal rights to pursue a full and fulfilling life where they have every opportunity to help create a society more accepting of the concept of disability as a health form of identity-based on the social model and not the old ideology of the medical model of disability.
We aim to:
- To provide new techniques to assist the quality of life and independence of persons with a disability through the advancement of technology.
- To give persons with a disability a forum in which they have a right to express their views towards government policy and matters relevant to disability.
- To enable fair and equal media representation through the development of news and original content.
- To provide education about disability and related issues with the hope that it will reduce discrimination.
- To establish an online community to encourage more interaction between disabled and able bodied people.
- To accept the concept of “disability” as a healthy form of identity and not something to be ashamed of.
