Guide to access disability supports
PROJECT
Fiscal Host: Gift Collective
Simplifying access to CDA and DA so families already under pressure can receive the financial support available to them.
About
Childhood Disability Allowance and Disability Allowance application guide
Families caring for children with chronic and complex medical conditions often face ongoing financial pressure alongside the demands of daily care.
In New Zealand, supports such as the Child Disability Allowance (CDA) and Disability Allowance (DA) are available to help ease this burden. However, these systems can be difficult to understand and navigate, particularly for parents who are already managing high levels of responsibility, fatigue, and stress.
As a result, many families either delay applying or miss out on support they are entitled to.
This project focuses on developing a clear, practical guide to help parents and caregivers understand and access CDA and DA without added confusion.
The guide is designed to:
- simplify complex information into clear steps
- reduce the time and energy required to apply
- support families to access financial assistance earlier
- ease some of the ongoing financial strain associated with long-term care
The resource is currently being reviewed by professionals within the community to ensure it is accurate, accessible, and genuinely helpful.
The next phase is to distribute this guide widely so it can reach families who need it most.
This project is a first step in addressing a broader gap — ensuring that parents are not left to navigate complex systems alone while carrying the long-term care of their child.
