About
ABOUT US
Who is organizing the Grocery Gift Card fundraiser?
The Grocery Gift Card fundraiser was organized by the East Bronx Democrats, a group of individuals who came together to participate actively in the community affairs of the East Bronx and to attempt to further the concerns of all its residents.
As the spread of the coronavirus disease known as COVID-19 continued to spike in New York City and “shelter in place” orders were implemented, we recognized a need to provide food assistance to individuals and families affected by the pandemic.
ABOUT THE GROCERY GIFT CARD FUNDRAISER
When did the campaign start?
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, in March 2020, the East Bronx Democrats began a campaign to bring together activists, organizers, neighbors, and donors to help Bronx residents in need obtain free grocery deliveries.
What is the goal of this fundraising campaign?
We recognize that low income communities often lack access to essential resources, particularly in times of crisis. Per recent data from the New York City Department of Health, low income communities in New York City are the hardest hit with respect to COVID-19 cases. The Bronx in particular, is the hungriest borough in New York City, with more than 1 in 4 (26%) of Bronx residents experiencing food insecurity. The goal of this campaign is to raise funds as a collective, and to use those funds to provide $50 gift cards (more if needed) to individuals and families in need of food assistance in the Bronx. As the elderly population is especially at risk for contracting this virus, we also want to ensure that they are able to secure essential items safely.
How will the funds be used?
100% of the funds raised will be used to secure free groceries for low-income communities.
When will the money raised be disbursed?
The funds will be disbursed on a rolling basis as we reach each $5,000 fundraising goal.
How will the funds be disbursed?
For individuals with access to electronic mail accounts, gift cards will be delivered via e-mail. For those individuals who do not have internet access or have trouble making online purchases, such as the elderly, we will provide assistance with grocery orders via phone.
