About

Eigen is an open source alternative to Google Workspace that you host yourself. Mail, drive, docs, sheets, slides, calendar, contacts and chat, in one server. You own your data because of how it is stored: mail in plain Maildir++, files as normal files, documents in SQLite databases you can copy and inspect. The code is MIT licensed and lives at github.com/eigen-is/eigen.

I build Eigen in my spare time, unpaid. This collective exists to make that sustainable, with a budget that is public down to the last euro.

What contributions pay for, in order:

  1. Infrastructure and tooling. The production server, the public demo instance, object storage and domains cost about €50 per month. The AI coding tools I build Eigen with bring the real monthly cost to about €250.
  2. Development time toward 1.0. Safe data migrations, verified backups, an end-to-end test suite. Eigen is pre-1.0 today, and I would not yet trust it with data you cannot afford to lose. This is the work that changes that.
  3. A third-party security audit, once the budget allows it.

What you get is a thank you, your name or logo in the supporters list, and a project that stays alive and independent. No support contracts and no promised features. Eigen has no SLA.

The collective is hosted by Open Source Collective, so contributions are handled by a real legal entity and companies can contribute against an invoice.
