Glossary of terms for reinvigorating local democratic engagement and social equity. WP2.
PROJECT
Part of: Fairville London Lab
Establishing theoretical foundation for the Fairville reseach programme that reflects the diverse understandings of key terms related to coproduction, inequality, and democracy.

About
The London Lab is helping to establish the theoretical foundation for the Fairville research project by contribuiting to Workpackage 2. The glossary within the FAIRVILLE consortium is designed to reflect the diverse understandings of key terms related to coproduction, inequality, and democracy. These include:
- Coproduction
- Empowerment
- Environmental Justice
- Epistemic Justice
- Inequality & social/spatial injustice
- Institutionalisation & institutional activism
- Mobilisation
- Municipalism
- Participation (in planning)
Rather than enforcing a single definition, it encourages debate, contrasts, and reflection on the different meanings these terms hold across various contexts. This inclusive approach mixes academic and non-academic contributions, incorporating texts, images, case studies, and personal stories. The glossary is intended to be accessible to a wide audience, including activists and ordinary citizens, and is created through a collective process that selects key terms relevant to the consortium's work. Hyperlinks connect related terms, offering readers a flexible, navigable resource rather than a rigid, exhaustive dictionary.
The London Lab proposes to take an active role to ensure that the glossary reflects real-world experiences and diverse perspectives, enhancing its relevance, inclusivity, and overall impact. By helping to incorporate the voices of local communities, activists and campaigners the glossary will become a more practical and accessible resource, fostering better communication and engagement between researchers and the communities they serve. This process will build trust and legitimacy, making the glossary a powerful tool for advocacy in promoting social, spatial, and environmental justice. Additionally, by embracing cultural and contextual sensitivity, the glossary will be adaptable and effective across different regions and communities. The London Lab seeks to promote the development of a resource that is not only academically robust but also grounded in the lived experiences of those most affected by the issues at hand.
