Day 1: Behind the Scenes
Published on January 20, 2021 by Harry Knight

For the first time, the Fake Blood team assembled on set!

After assessing that the shoot could be done safely during the COVID-19 Pandemic, we were able to go ahead with production.

It was an exciting time for everyone to work on this project after a difficult year spent mainly in isolation. We teamed up with the film and media college Boomsatsuma to give students who menstruate, the opportunity to work on a film about periods alongside other talented crew including Bethany Fitter, Gemma Elliot and Livvy Nash. Not only did the day provide a chance to produce great work, it also created a safe space for people to talk about their periods in a way that we intend the film will also encourage audiences to do.

Like all good film sets, we experienced some difficulties getting out backdrop perfectly flat and straight. Once this was in place we started dying the fabric with 8 litres of dye per take. It made for a messy set. As the day took place, everyone came together to perfect the various activities, from spraying the dye to hanging the fabric and cleaning the set between takes to communicating as a team.

It was a successful shoot and we're enjoying looking through the rushes. Most importantly, we're now in a position where we can bring some of these behind the scenes images and material we captured on the day, to help illustrate just how powerful a cinematic experience can be. Not just as a film, but a tool for helping remove stigma around period and create conversations about the benefits of a period.

We hope you enjoyed our brief update and look forward to sharing more shortly. x
