August 2025 Update
Published on August 24, 2025 by Marcel Klehr

Hello everyone,

It's been a while since the last update. 2025 is in full swing, the days are hot and dry here in Germany. I'd like to share what's been going on with my projects. A lot has happened. Here is my update of what I've done with the time you have helped sponsor.

For floccus the first months of 2025 began with a bit of a debacle, as I rolled out a change to the logging module that sadly caused crashes on Chromium browsers for spuriious reasons. After a few back and forths, without me really being able to reproduce the crashes, I finally opted to rollback the entire change. I lost a few users over this, but such is life. The story does end happily with the release of v5.6.x though, which features KaraKeep support, as well as Kagi's new Orion browser and reinstated support for the latest version of Linkwarden, which had changed their API, leaving floccus users out in the cold. For the upcoming version I also have a few aces up my sleeve, which means: Performance improvements, especially for larger collections of bookmarks, and finally some improvements for the mobile app. The upcoming version will also feature an anonymous feedback form, where you can send your gripes.
With your support, I’m tackling these intricate issues one step at a time!

I've also spent some time on Nextcloud Bookmarks as my recommended backend for floccus. Apart from bug fixes, I've worked on the speed of the HTTP API, to make syncing with floccus even faster. The result is speedups of up to 50%! Additionally, the bookmarks app now optionally (!) integrates with Nextcloud's Context Chat feature, which allows you to ask questions about your stuff and get (hopefully) useful answers by AI. This means, all your bookmarks can not only be full-text indexed, but can also serve to answer your questions (by a selfhosted AI) without having to dig through your collection, guessing likely search queries. I'm aware that not everyone is enamoured with AI and I'm skeptical of a lot of uses myself, I just think it's a neat feature to be integrating with, for those that want it. As always, If you have ideas for Nextcloud Bookmarks, head over to github and file an issue and if you're a happy user already, you can give me a smile by giving it a review over on apps.nextcloud.com/apps/bookmarks <3

I've also recently had time to produce a semi-professional promo video to more easily get the point across what floccus is about. Go check it out and forward it to people who might be interested, if you like :) youtube.com/watch?v=DFE3MFYT1jM

As always, I'm very grateful for the support I've received from everyone of you in working on these projects. Whether it’s your donations, feedback, or words of encouragement, every bit helps to keep this project alive and thriving. You are a vital part of this journey! Thank you to all of you who continue to support me in these efforts!
Also, by all means, feel free to shoot me a message, if you have feedback, ideas, critique or just want to say hi.

All the best and godspeed to you, wherever you may be right now :)
Marcel

PS: For the coming months I've devised a bit of a community engagement thing: You can help shape floccus by taking part in the following poll: "What would you like me to focus on in floccus?" Vote for the feature you'd like to see in floccus!

Thank you for all your hard work, Marcel!  I'll take part in the poll.  I hope there's an option of "I trust your direction, please do what you feel is best with the project."  If not, know that's how I feel.

Yes, thank you for all of the hard work. I just upgraded to 5.7 on my Android 16 phone and am really happy with all of the bugfixes.
