FYI.org.nz helps people to access official information through the Official Information Act.
About
Everyone in Aotearoa New Zealand has the right to request official information from public agencies, and by law they have to respond.
At FYI.org.nz we help people to access official information through the Official Information Act (and its local government equivalent, LGOIMA). We do this by assisting them to send information requests online, and we publish them in an online archive along with all the correspondence so that other members of the public may benefit too. We have facilitated and published over 26,000 information requests since 2012.
This right is often known as Freedom of Information (FOI) or Right To Information (RTI) in other countries. We are part of a network of around 30 independent similar organisations around the world. Our service is non-partisan: we support users of diverse political views and varied backgrounds to access this right.
Freedom of Information is often seen as merely a transparency and accountability tool, but we see it as a key part of open government which enables New Zealanders to participate more effectively in the running of their country. This participation purpose is recognised in clause 4 of the OIA itself.
Although our production hosting costs are currently generously covered by The New Zealand Herald, your donation will help us improve and expand the service, and introduce additional tools and infrastructure to support a wider volunteer base.
Help us build the long term sustainability of FYI.org.nz.
Charitable donations
FYI.org.nz is an unincorporated organisation. Your donation will be paid to The Gift Trust (CC40774), the registered charity behind our fundholder Gift Collective, to be spent only on FYI.org.nz charitable activities. You will receive a receipt so that you can claim a donation tax credit.
