About

GestureLabs is a community-driven initiative developing open, ethical, and adaptive communication technology for people who cannot speak.

We believe that communication is a human right, and that technology should adapt to human ability, not the other way around.

Our flagship project, the Ability-Adaptive Augmentative Communication Platform (A3CP), explores how personalized machine learning can transform idiosyncratic gestures, facial expressions, and vocalizations into meaningful digital communication. By combining open-source software, ethical AI principles, and caregiver-in-the-loop learning, GestureLabs creates tools that evolve with each individual user.

We collaborate with universities, therapists, caregivers, and open-source developers to ensure that our systems are transparent, reproducible, and freely accessible. Every prototype we build is designed to be replicable anywhere in the world, empowering local communities, schools, and welfare institutions to build inclusive communication infrastructures without dependency on commercial vendors.

Our goals:

Enable nonverbal and minimally verbal individuals to express themselves using personalized multimodal AI.
Develop open frameworks for adaptive gesture and sound recognition that respect privacy and dignity.
Support caregivers and institutions through transparent, sustainable, and community-owned technology.
Advance ethical research and co-design methods that include the people most often excluded from digital innovation.

GestureLabs is in the process of registered as a non-profit in Berlin Germany and welcomes collaboration from technologists, researchers, families, and advocacy groups who share our belief in equitable access to communication.
