A Quick Update on Glimpse Image Editor 0.2.0 Beta (Fixed)
Published on July 1, 2020 by Bobby Moss

Thank you for continuing to back our project! Contrary to our earlier blog post, we expect the public beta for Glimpse Image Editor 0.2.0 within the next couple of weeks.

Features to look forward to will be:

  • A re-base from 2.10.12 to 2.10.18
  • A new 64-bit MSI installer for Windows that supports custom install locations
  • A range of quality of life improvements (such as improved UI artwork and back-end refactoring to help BSD port teams)

We also hope to provide experimental new Linux AppImage packages based on some excellent third-party work. One will provide a vanilla experience, and another will include extra third-party plug-ins. We are also investigating how we can add extra third-party plug-ins to our Windows port in a future release.

You may have also noticed our homepage has had a facelift. The placeholder images will be updated within the next few weeks, and there's an exciting new facelift coming in this pull request: https://github.com/glimpse-editor/getglimpse-web/pull/95

We also spent some time over the previous month working on automated builds, and have successful got an automated sanity check working. We had hoped to have a fully-automated build toolchain for Linux AppImages and Windows ZIP files, but that has been cut to make our "some time in July 2020" release deadline.

Finally, we also asked the community whether we should switch from the default keybindings to the new PhotoGIMP ones to assist people switching from commercial alternatives to free software for the first time. While our Twitter followers were very excited about such a change, our Mastodon followers had a much more mixed response. We have chosen not to make that change in 0.2.0, but we are looking into ways of making it easier to switch to the PhotoGIMP preset in a future release.

We are hopeful that Glimpse Image Editor 0.2.0 will be the last "getting things off the ground" release, and that 0.2.x releases scheduled for November 2020 and March 2021 will include some very cool new changes that differentiate the fork more and actively excite people.
